Project Mending Sky (I): The Green Man

Hi there!

Are you interested in watching ARTivate's thought-provoking plays on environmental conservation?
Are you interested in seeing how The Flames make music out of practically everything?
Are you interested in participating in a first – of –its- kind bazaar that promotes environmental conservation?
Are you keen on knowing how you, yes YOU, can help save Mother Earth by doing your part?

Join us for a day of fun-filled and enriching experience! Come to Project Mending Sky (1) – The Green Man!

Date : 20 Jan 2008
Time: 11am to 6pm
Venue: *scape Youth Centre (opp. Cineleisure)

Do bring along a recyclable item to donate to the 3 colourful recycling bins at *scape Youth Park !

*BRING YOUR OWN MUG AND GET A DRINK FREE !

There are several parts in our event:

1) Performance by Andrew & Grace Home (AG)
AG is a home for female teenagers. Some girls from the home came together and formed a percussion group, The Flames. They used recycled materials such as trash bins, tin cans etc to make a music performance. Performance slots: 11a.m. , 1.15p.m. , 3.15p.m. (and not forgetting the Last Bang at 5.45p.m. !)

2) Environment Plays
The plays are written and performed by ARTivators with Koh Hui Ling as our director. They will revolve around environmental issues and what we can do to help save the environment! (Performance slots are right after performance by AG at *scape Youth Centre-Lab)

3) Exhibition
The exhibition will include information about ARTivate, The Green Man, *scape, environmental groups in Singapore. We will be working with environmental groups who will provide us with materials for our exhibition to tell people about the environmental issues.

4) “Origami” stalls
Stalls that teach people how to use our rubbish to fold into something useful, will be set up near the exhibition area. For example, chopsticks paper cover can be folded into chopsticks holder, how to fold plastic bags to save space, etc. It'll teach you how to give rubbish a second life!

5) Selling of soap and candles
We have worked with the girls in Andrew and Grace Home to come out with soaps and candles. look at that duckie soap ! CUTE RIGHT. hohoho i know you cant wait to get them in your hands ! These will be sold (at Really Reasonable price of course) during the event (:

6) Selling of reusable cutlery sets
We will be selling 50 reusable cutlery sets at a reasonable price as currently in Singapore, these kinds of cutlery sets are sold at a high price and that may be a reason why Singaporeans are still using disposables often. Therefore, by providing the reusable cutleries, they will be more encouraged to not use disposables and help to save the environment and reduce the usage of plastic.

7) Free Drink
If you bring your own mug from home, you can collect a free cup of drink with it! otherwise, you'll have to purchase a bio-degradeable cup. This is a gentle reminder that things like paper/wood are limited resources, hence do make a mental note to bring a mug on that day ! (:

8) Flea Stalls
We will be “recycling” and selling 2nd hand clothes, accessories at reasonable prices ! The earnings of these clothes will go into our ARTivate fund to cover costs for this project or our future projects. so do SUPPORT US !

9) Guest Stalls
We have invited organisations, such as Food For All, to set up games stalls or provide useful information/activities that they are actively-involved in helping the environment. This serves to tell the public that there are people in Singapore who are concerned about the environment and are doing works to save our Earth. We hope that through these, the public will be more motivated to care for the environment.

*Food for All is unregistered non-profit based in Singapore dedicated to fighting hunger full-time! They aim to support local food rations programmes, advocate on hunger and food security issues, and encourage the appreciation of food that is good, healthy and fair!
They're currently working on our first major project, a Sector Scan of Food Rations Programmes (FRPs) in Singapore. The list is intended for public release to enable the various FRPs to have a spatial appreciation of the local food rations services scene so as to avoid wasteful duplication of services, and to encourage collaboration, such as through joint food drives, and the pooling of resources.

There will be Q&A sessions held to quiz your knowledge about the environment too !
Prizes to be won :D

Launch of Singapore Poly's Diploma in Applied Drama & Psychology

a group of ARTivators ( xuemei, huiling, guppy) attended Singapore Poly's launch of their new programme in Applied Drama & Psychology on 12 Dec 2007 at the Chinatown Heritage Centre (原貌馆)

we were treated to an excerpt of MUSEUM THEATRE in the heritage centre itself! the casts were mainly SP students and lecturers and SENIOR CITIZENS from ''The Third Age", a council that promotes active aging amongst Singaporeans.

the event was a demostration of how Applied Drama can be utilized to promote drug awareness and inter-generation interaction, hence the themes were as such. the plot revolves around solving the mystery behind Ah Teck, a coolie from early Singapore. We were jet-setted back into the early days when telephones were the gadgets of the rich and harsh labour the only way to make ends meet and assume the roles of MaTa ( police officers)

it was an interesting piece by SP, unfortunately, it was terribly short,we hardly had time to interact with the Senior Citizen actors. however, this exposure prompted us to wonder, can we, ARTivators, utilize this medium and the same museum to tell our story? mm...

*pictures are COMING SOON!* :P

Lesson

23 - 24 Nov 2007

For these two days, we had playwright lessons with Mr. Kok Heng Leun. We were writing scripts for our event - "Project Mending Sky (I): The Green Man" - in January 2008.

Some of us listening attentively ...

Us diligently working on our scripts ...

Personally, I have learnt a lot from these two lessons. These include not only the theoretical aspects of script-writing, but also how to think deeper and how I can always draw ideas from other people's works and from the surroundings.

Okay, I guess that'll be it for lessons. You really have to attend them to know how it feels. Haha.

To see what kinds of scripts some of us wrote, do remember to attend our event:

Event: Project Mending Sky (I): The Green Man 补天计划一之《绿吗?》
Date: 20 January 2008
Time: 11am - 6pm
Venue: *scape Youth Park

Andrew & Grace Day!

A few of ARTivate members spent their 3rd and 4th Dec at Andrew & Grace Home!

Obviously we had lots of fun! The girls were great, friendly and responsive :)

Photos to sum up the two days:

Day 1:

The girls hard at work.

Group photo of the day? (Part of us)

Us with the girls

Product No. 1: Nice bracelet made by the girls.

Product No. 2: Crown for our mascot by Jiayi & Guppy

That basically sums our day 1. It was a tiring day, from warming up with AG girls, games, hands on and so on. Nevertheless, it was a great day and we all looked forward to the next!

Day 2:

Hard at work, again.
