Only showing this week till next Wed at Picturehouse.

A young woman retraces the footsteps of China's female soldiers of The Long March and encounters untold stories of courage and hope in the face of extreme deprivation and brutality.

This is the never-been-told story of the Chinese Red Army's teenage female soldiers of The Long March - a massive military retreat of over 200,000 troops on foot over 12,500 kilometres that lasted from 1934 to 1937.

Only one per cent or 2,000 troops on the March were females. Most of them were teenagers fleeing poverty, cruelty and general discrimination against females. Some also had bound feet, a thousand-year-old tradition which was still a custom at the time.

Elly, a 28-year-old journalist from Beijing, embarks on a 5,000 kilometre odyssey that takes her from Cangxi in Central China to Xingxingxia in the Gobi Desert northwest of China. Along the way, she uncovers the tragic and chilling story of the destruction of the Western Route Army - the greatest military failure of the Chinese Red Army. This episode of Long March history is largely unknown outside of China.

As she sets out in search of history, she is forced to confront her identity as a modern Chinese woman.

Feet Unbound was inspired by the books Women Of The Long March (Allen & Unwin) by Lily Xiao Hong Lee and Sue Wiles, and Choosing Revolution: Chinese Women Soldiers On The Long March (University of Illinois Press) by Helen Praeger Young.

duration: 87 minutes and 52 minutes
language: Mandarin & English
subtitles: English
screen format: 16 : 9

Appeal for warm clothings

From our friend, Jia Hui.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: Appeal for warm clothings

Dear Everyone,

I am writing to appeal for warm clothings for the orphans in Kunming China, in the mountainous village in particular.

My father-in-law who is living there now, visited some orphanages there and they are in need of warm clothings, anything from thick socks to pullover. He will be my contact point with the orphanages. He is doing community work with them.

I have personally been to the villages and they are not well off. And the orphanages do not get a lot of attention from the local
authorities.

It is actually very sad because many baby girls are just left at the doors of the orphanages. One of the problems created by the one-child policy in China to curb population boom. The villagers only want baby boys.

Requirement for the clothings:
1. Clean
2. Second-hand but not torn please
3. Winter wear only (because cotton wear is of little use)
4. Any size (even baby wear)
5. For boys or girls

Please forward this email to your friends & relatives, especially those who have children and have the means to travel to cold climate with their children.

If you can contribute, email me and we can discuss how best to deliver the stuff to me or for me to collect.

Thank you very much for reading this email and forwarding it.

Synopsis of Movies:
When trade relations with the socialist bloc collapsed in 1990, Cuba lost 80 percent of its pesticide and fertilizer imports and half its petroleum--the mainstays of its highly industrialized agriculture. Challenged with growing food for 11 million in the face of the continuing US embargo, Cuba embarked on the largest conversion to organic farming ever attempted.

The Greening of Cuba (filmed in 1996) profiles Cuban farmers and scientists working to reinvent a sustainable agriculture based on ecological principles and local knowledge rather than imported agricultural inputs. In their quest for self sufficiency, Cubans combine time-tested traditional methods with cutting edge bio-technology.

The Greening of Cuba reminds us that developed and developing nations alike can choose a healthier environment and still feed their people.

The Power of Community (filmed in 2006) tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. It is a follow-up to The Greening of Cuba 10 years later to see how the Cuban transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.
