SHORT+SWEET SINGAPORE ACTING AND DIRECTING WORKSHOPS 2009

To help you prepare for Short+Sweet Singapore and beyond, we’vegot some great workshops coming up from 23 – 29 March 2009.

• Directing – Level I or IILed by Leo Gene Peters, visiting director from New Zealand.

ACTING WORKSHOP 1: ‘THE FUNDAMENTALS OF REALIST ACTING’
This workshop focuses on some of the fundamental skills an actor needs forsuccess in performance. Participants will work with monologues andundertake a series of practical exercises. They will draw on realisticacting techniques to help them create believable, interesting and dynamiccharacters.

ACTING WORKSHOP 2: ‘THE NEXT LEVEL’
This workshop develops some of the skills introduced in the beginnersacting session, whilst also introducing more advanced practices. Thissession is highly practical, with participants working with scenes andexcerpts from a variety of contemporary plays.

DIRECTING WORKSHOP 1: ‘COMMUNICATING THE MAIN EVENT’
This workshop focuses on how to communicate the dramatic arc or main eventof a play in a clear and visceral way.

Working under Leo Gene Peters’ guidance, each participant will direct ascene according to his/her interpretation of the text. By exploring thevarious ways a text can be dramatised, you’ll learn how to create a ‘map’of your vision. This kind of exploration is crucial to any strong work.

DIRECTING WORKSHOP 2 - ‘BRINGING THE EVENT TO LIFE’
This workshop will show you how to bring it to life through theperformance of your actors. Together with Leo Gene Peters, you’ll explorea variety of techniques/methodologies for directing actors. Using a givenscene, you will learn how to create a vibrant and exciting piece oftheatre.

ABOUT LEO GENE PETERS
American Director Leo Gene Peters graduated with a Master of Theatre Arts(Directing) Degree from Toi Whakaari and Victoria University of Wellingtonin 2004. He's worked as a professional director, designer, technician,actor, tutor, facilitator and mentor for the past 10 years. Most recentlyhe directed, designed and co-devised Paolo Rotundo's and Rob Mokaraka'sStrange Resting Places (Chapman Tripp Nominations: Most Promising NewDirector, Production of the Year). His original works include directingSettling (BATS/ STAB 2007 - Chapman Tripp Nominee: Most OriginalProduction) and Shifting (BATS 2006 - Chapman Tripp Nominee: MostPromising New Director). In 2005 Gene directed, designed and co-wroteSEEyD Company's the Remedy Syndrome (Chapman Tripp Nominee: Best New Play)and co-directed, with Andrew Foster, James Ashcroft's solo show Sorry I'mOut, But I Can be Booked.

ABOUT NICOLE STINTON
Nicole Stinton performed professionally for many years in the AustralianTheatre, Film and TV industries as an Actor, Vocalist, Pianist and Dancer.

Nicole has also taught Musical Theatre, Acting and Voice to bothprofessionals and amateurs for over 15 years. Now based in Singapore,Nicole is a highly sought after freelance Director, Musical DirectorTrainer and Producer. She has worked with Lasalle College of The Arts,21st Century Performing Arts Festival (Malaysia), Escape Theatre, MusicTheatre Ltd, The Arts House and The Esplanade Theatres On The Bay.

She currently is the Festival Director of Short+Sweet Singapore and theFounding Director of Performing Arts and Training company, Stint on Stage.
