New Play Season !

Hello hello ! sharing by me(jiayi) on the Drama Box's New Play Season.

Blanc Space: The Playwright Series is a 18-month long new script incubating programme where aspiring writers work with established local playwright-mentors. The New Play Season is the fruit of our Playwright programme, showcasing 3 of the completed new plays. It boasts a comprehensive programme comprising theatre performances, two Playread Sessions for new scripts-in-progress developed under Playwright Series II and a series of Workshops and Forum Discussions.

The rest who attended do feel free to add in too (:

Public talk: The Dramatic World of Paul Poon (1 Aug)

Paul Poon is Hong Kong's most prolific playwright. In his 25 years of writing, Paul has written 50 plays and won numerous awards. What makes his plays rarity is the dramatic world he has created: the surreal and inclusive portrayal of people in Hong Kong, and in fact, also reflective of the psychological landscape of city dwellers all over the world.

Some points which i picked up during his sharing:
1. To him, academic(学术) and creation(创作) are 2 different choices. He went into creation (becoming a playwright) and did not complete his thesis then.
(there isn't right or wrong, just a matter of choice.)

2. Relationship between the script and theatre
Actors have their own perspectives/instincts/thoughts on the script, hence space has to be given for them to explore and create

3. Writing for whom?
- every human has his/her own smell, energy, air/aura. (味道/活力/气)
- writing for the land (in his case, HK)
however, he also mentioned that his 视野(vision?) cannot remain in hongkong due to
geographical, cultural changes(whether subtle/extreme), change in state of (human)being...
thus to make his works stay "alive", he has to keep up with the tempo/pace of life to create.
(the role of a writer; making a difference, arts for arts sake, self-reflection, plain interest, etc?)

4. Considerations while writing
-relationship between your life and what you write (how much/strongly you feel for something, what you care about)
-relationship between language and culture (difficult to separate this 2 terms)

stay tuned for updates on other talks/performances/dramatised reading/workshops too !
this new play season makes me want to explore the role of playwright more :D
